How To Measure Pupillary Distance (PD)

What is pupillary distance ?

PD or Pupillary Distance is the distance between the centre of your pupils/eyes measured in millimeters. PD is important so that we can make the centre of the lens align with your line of sight to give you the best vision and minimise distortions.

For Single Vision Near lens please enter your child's near PD.

For Single Vision Distance please enter your child's distance PD.

How to measure your child's DISTANCE pupillary distance ?

  • 1) Simply use a small 15cm ruler

  • 2) Stand directly facing your child, hold the ruler on your child’s forehead just above their eyes, making sure the ruler is horizontal and straight.

  • 3) Align the “0” mark with the centre of the pupil of your child’s right eye that is directly opposite your left eye.

  • 4) Without moving the ruler, have your child look at your right eye, and read the millimetre line that is above your child’s left eye.

  • 1) Alternatively, align the “0” on the temporal edge of your child’s right iris and measure to the inner edge of your child’s left iris.

If Your Child has a Squint or a Turned Eye

Make sure you close your child’s left eye while you align the “0” on your child’s right pupil, and close your child’s right eye while you read off the millimetre on your child’s left pupil.

Note: Your Optometrist or Ophthalmologist may give one PD number (distance between two pupils) or two PD numbers (distance between each pupil to the middle of your nose). For example your PD maybe 54mm but you might have on your prescription 27 and 27.
